PROCRASTINATING LIKE A PRO !
It’s six o’clock on a Sunday night. My heart is racing. My speech is due the next morning. I’m sitting at my computer wishing I hadn’t waited until the last minute. I realised that if I had just written it when I was meant to instead of procrastinating I could have avoided this stress. Next thing I know it's six thirty and still no ideas, no words typed, no speech written.
What is procrastinating you may ask? Procrastination is the bad habit of putting work off until the last moment.
You might hear your Parents procrastinating when your Mum asks your Dad to clean her car, You may hear the excuses “ Honey your car looks lovely” or “hang on sweetie I’m watching the game.” You might not know it but even you procrastinate. Even if your mum asks you to make your bed and your answer is “Sorry can’t hear you mum” or even “mum I’m busy at the moment… playing on my phone.”
Most people procrastinate because they are told to do something they don’t want to do or they would rather do something fun like playing on the tramp.
A man called Mason Cooley once said “Procrastination makes easy things hard, hard things harder.” I’m sure you have all procrastinated at one time or another. I definitely have. But believe it or not, there is a positive thing about procrastination. It’s the difference between passive procrastination and active procrastination. Passive procrastination is one way of putting off work. It’s when you put something off, but don't do a useful task with your spare time. Studies have shown that about 80% of college students procrastinate. Active procrastination is when you know that there is something you should be doing, but you know that what you’re doing is more important and it will pay off in the long run. For example, you might have to take care of your little brother or finish your homework because you made a commitment. Active procrastinators are A) Good at organizing and B) Tend to work best under pressure and so they delay doing there work because they know that if they wait till the last moment, they will complete their work better. Active procrastinators also have lower stress levels than passive procrastinators. This is because they work better when they have an adrenaline rush. For example when they know their work is due very soon.
There are lots of reasons why a person might choose to procrastinate, some procrastinators lack time management, or even have a lack of motivation. Procrastinators also have a fear of failing. This is where they are afraid to work hard on a project as they are worried that their work isn’t up to a high standard.
How to avoid procrastinating…
When something pops up like a job or homework, straight away Your answer usually would be “I’ll do it in a minute” because you think you have something more fun to do. But you have to break that habit. I dare you all to next time you’re asked to do something you don’t want to do or will put off doing, jump up and say “sure, I would be more than happy to do it.” this way once you have finished your job or homework you can then spend some time doing what you enjoy. Here are some examples of avoiding procrastination, I hope you all have a pen ready as I know most of you will need my help with this.
- Write down your goal and give yourself a deadline. A goal without a deadline can never be put off.
- Break your goal into small parts, that way you can work on each part at a time.
- Change your environment, this could mean changing the area in which you work or even just moving your phone or game out of your room so that you are not tempted to play with it.
- Motivate yourself. Tell yourself that once you have finished your work you can do what you would chose to do.
By using these easy tips, you will definitely find yourself procrastinating less.
